Reception with the artists on Saturday September 10, 2-4pm

Nickie Lewis is a self taught sculpture and installation artist who lives in Burnaby B.C.
“I am currently passionate about creating sustainable eco-friendly art with natural materials such as cedar sticks, jute twine, Ivy, and moss. I recently caused a stir when I created 8 large-scale sculptures from sticks in a Burnaby Park. I have since then, created a 10ft wide 5ft long phoenix for the Deer Lake Gallery's garden, and am currently working on 3 large sculptures for the City of New Westminster.”
Nickie Lewis began her artistic career in theatre. Six years ago, after discovering a community of people who embraced art and seemed to break down the belief that art needs to be shown in a gallery, and it is something that needs training to do, Lewis was inspired to create art. Working with her husband and friends, Lewis built a large-scale (8’ x 6’)  interactive art installation called The Ballsy Rocker, a wooden rocking pirate ship that lights up when rocked from the inside. The project’s tongue-in-cheek reference being, “It takes balls to rock the boat, but when you do, you just might light up the world.” The piece has been displayed at Burning Man and has since been rebuilt and redesigned three times. For the past six years, Lewis has been creating a large-scale installation for display until the COVID-19 lockdown at which point she determined she needed another way to get her art out to the world.

For this exhibition, you can expect the gallery to be consumed by Nickie's work. Both large and small works will create a wonderful space to walk into.Photographs and interviews available by request. outsidersandothers@gmail.com

THE TRAVELLING LINE

Showcasing the remarkable work of Gigaemi Kukwits, this exhibition includes a selection of his paintings, many from the last 20 years. Now in his seventh decade as an artist, Gigaemi has consistently sought to create compelling work that joins his
Indigenous heritage and experience with the artistic influences around him.

In 1966, he spent several months on a trip that took him across
Europe, stopping in London, Paris,Amsterdam, and Munich, where he viewed the art in such museums as the Tate, the
Louvre, and Rijksmuseum and made new works that he sold along the way. After spending two years at the Vancouver School of Art from 1967 to 1969, he concluded that his learning would be more productive if he returned home. Ensuing travels and time spent in Morocco, Thailand, Indonesia, and the American desert in Arizona, among other places, furthered his sense of creative curiosity and experimentation. The subjects of Gigaemis paintings range from narrative to symbolic, to purely formal play, all unified by his intention to explore.

Correspondences: Experiments at the Intersection of Poetry & Art

April 21, 6-8pm
May 19, 6-8pm
June 2, 6-8pm

With Sheryda Warrener
In this workshop series, participants will explore various poetic modes and approaches
to visual-textual combinations. How is text transformed when placed in relation to
image? How does text meaningfully enhance an image? Well take an inquiry-based
approach to experimentation, with the aim of activating formal possibilities and
enlivening creative practice. Workshops can be taken independently of one another, or
together. We encourage those with backgrounds in either or both poetry and image-
making to sign up.

Thursday, April 21: Material Provocations
The English word text comes from Medieval Latin textus style or texture of a work,
literally thing woven, from the past participle stem of textere: to weave, to join, fit
together, construct.
In this workshop, well juxtapose physical materials in unexpected
ways, then apply this approach to language, tracing the natural connections between
text and textile.

Thursday, May 19: Active Archive
Inspired by Edith Youngs book of typologies, Color Scheme, well explore the personal
archive as an engine that revs creative practice. Participants will share their own
selected collections of objects, then use these as visual-material provocations for a
generative writing practice.

Thursday, June 2: Writing That Is Also Drawing
How is a map or a diagram simultaneously a poem and an artwork? Our experimental approach will be inspired by readings from interdisciplinary artists working at the intersections of poetry, prose, and image-making, including Renee Gladman and Amy Sillman.

Exhibition: Quantam Healing Art

  • 1450 West Broadway Vancouver, BC, V6H 1H4 Canada (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Vancouver based Artist Joseph Boutros Ghabi is set to host his first solo art show, AGAPE Solo Exhibition, at Pacific Arts Market, Vancouver BC from 26th May 2022 through to 25 June 2022.

Lebanese by birth, Joseph made Vancouver his home in 2009. Originally as a trained electrical engineer, a series of life changing experiences led him to embrace energy healing and Blueprint Numerology as a career, whereby over 35 years he has significantly impacted and transformed the lives of many people from physical, mental, emotional sickness and pain to full empowerment and living lives of love, joy and fulfilment.

After joining a painting party in 2017, Joseph immediately fell in love with painting, and recognized it as a powerful form of expression that he would like to commit too. Self-taught, he has painted over 400 paintings and is exhibiting in various galleries and art publications internationally. Today, with his background of 35 years Master Healer and Blueprint Numerologist, Joseph is creating Quantum Healing Art, to awaken and empower a new appreciation and function of art that will connect spirituality and physicality in our human consciousness. He is committed to freeing the human Soul.

“I’m super excited about the opportunity for my debut solo exhibit at Pacific Arts Market,” says Joseph. “My purpose is to create intentional art using an awareness of frequency and vibration that awakens us to our true identity as successful, confident and powerful beings. I’m delighted that this innovation in Quantum Healing Art aligns with my life-long commitment to freeing the human Soul.”

AGAPE Solo Exhibition has deep meaning for the Artist Joseph Boutros Ghabi. The name Agape traces back to the Greek word meaning Unconditional Love and highlights the lineage of Joseph's family name from his father’s side. The show is about bringing the Artist Joseph Boutros Ghabi back home to discover the missing pieces of his life. Through his beautiful paintings, he welcomes all to explore the mystery and power of his insights. He presents the light of his origins, to awaken and inspire the light of humanity’s ‘homecoming.’

Make sure not to miss out on the experience of interacting with Artist Joseph Boutros Ghabi during his debut art show AGAPE Solo Exhibition at Pacific Arts Market, 1450 W Broadway, Vancouver, BC V6H 1H4, from 26th May to 25th June 2022.

Queer Futurities: Open Space [Victoria, BC]

Queer Futurities: holding area, gathering place (May 13-July 23, 2022)
Opening Reception: Friday, May 13, 6-9 pm, performance by Edzi'u at 7pm

Open Space Gallery (Victoria, BC) is excited to announce 'Queer Futurities: holding
area, gathering place', a two-part project curated by Dani Neira which engages the
potentialities of queer collective knowledge and care through a group exhibition and
workshop + performance series.

The group exhibition holding area features the works of Kitt Peacock, Edziu, Cassia
Powell, Florence Yee, Arezu Salamzadeh, Margaret August, Nicole Mandryk, Romi Kim
and Kendell Yan. Exploring what Jos Esteban Muoz calls the forward-dawning
potentials of queerness, holding area creates a temporary but affective space which
holds collective knowledge. Through a range of mediums, including audio-visual
installation, textiles, beading, performance and painting, the artists works explore the
tenderness and nuance of both holding and queerness through alternative forms of
care, storytelling, commemoration and place/space-making. By offering us fissures in
hegemonic ways of being, holding area aims to reveal glimmers of futurity.

Gathering place activates Queer Futurities themes of collective knowledge and care
through skill-sharing and community gathering outside of the gallery space with
workshops and performances. Programming will include a weaving workshop by
Estraven Lupino-Smith, a mutual aid workshop by the Community Fridge, and a
Queer Calisthenics performance by keiko Hart.

Join the artists on Friday, May 13 from 6-9 pm for an evening of art, music &
community on the opening night of holding area, featuring a performance at 7pm by
sound artist and musician Edzi'u. This is a free, in-person event at Open Space
Gallery, 510 Fort St, 2nd floor, Victoria, BC.

Travelling Exhibit: Japan Foundation

  • Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre (map)

The Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre presents
Japanese Design Today 100
a travelling exhibit from the Japan Foundation
May 7 - June 26, 2022

The Nikkei National Museum is delighted to host a travelling exhibit from the Japan
Foundation titled, Japanese Design Today 100. The exhibit features 100 Japanese
products from the 1950s to the present, with many objects designed post-2010. The
exhibit has been curated to offer visitors a look into life in Japan through design, as
well as a glimpse into trends in Japanese culture which influence the world today.

The exhibit, curated into 10 themes, includes famous designers Sori Yanagi, Riki
Watanabe, and Issey Miyake:

Classic Japanese Design
Furniture + houseware
Tableware + cookware
Apparel + accessories
Children
Stationery
Hobbies
Healthcare
Disaster relief
Transportation

This exhibit is curated by Hiroshi Kashiwagi (Design Critic and Professor at Musashino
Art University), Masafumi Fukagawa (Curator), Shu Hagiwara (Design Director), and
Noriko Kawakami (Journalist, Associate Director of 21_21 Design Sight)

”The 100 designs gathered here include mass or popular design as well as what is
known as high design. Not all of them have the hard-edged, clean lines typical of
modern design; many have more supple forms typical of traditional crafts. These
differences reflect the tendency of current Japanese design.”
-Hiroshi Kashiwagi, co-curator

“Many wonderful products are being created in Japan with refined techniques, a
marvellous sense of beauty, and accurate apprehension of the needs of users. These
products are also based on careful observation and deep understanding of the life,
culture, and perceptions of people living in contemporary times. By looking at the group of designs selected for this exhibition it is possible to get a good overall picture of
Japanese life today.”
-Masafumi Fukagawa, co-curator

“Even more exciting are the efforts being made by designers to improve recycled
materials to provide customers with elegant, beautiful, and practical products. A good
example is a lamp shade utilizing an unwoven textile made entirely of fibers from
recycled plastic bottles. In addition to being environmentally friendly, this lamp shade,
which is folded into shape by hand, produces delicate effect of light and shadow that
bring the sensibility of traditional Japanese lighting in to the present. This product is
designed in a way that appeals to peoples sensibilities as well as being
environmentally friendly.”
-Noriko Kawakami, co-curator

“Regional production centres are quietly being reorganized and revitalized with the aid
of design.”
-Shu Hagiwara, co-curator.

Solo Exhibition: Leon Phillips

Paintings that explore the materiality of colour are featured in a new solo exhibition by Leon Phillips at THIS Gallery.

Opening reception on Saturday May 7, noon - 4 pm
The artist will be in attendance.

Leon Phillips: The Matter of Colour takes as its starting point the physicality of pigment and its intrinsic qualities as a transmitter of colour. Paint, brushes and the artist’s body work together as a colour delivery system to create a choreographic record of movement on the painting’s surface.

For Phillips, paintings are investigations into what nonbinary gestures might look like while creating embodied perceptual experiences for the viewer. Included in the exhibition are oil on canvas paintings and gouache on paper paintings.

In 2021, Phillips was part of the Mark Rothko Painting Symposium at the Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre in Latvia. Daugavpils is the birthplace of Rothko, the American colour field painter who rose to prominence in the 1940s in New York and became one of the most influential artists of his generation. Phillips’ work was featured in a juried group exhibition and is now in the art museum’s permanent collection.

Phillips has been awarded grants from the Vermont Studio Center, the BC Arts Council and the Canada Council for the Arts. He’s also attended international residencies at the Vermont Studio Centre, the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts and the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity. He has a Bachelor of Arts (cum laude) from the University of Saskatchewan and a Bachelor of Environmental Studies from the School of Architecture, University of Waterloo.

conversation about complex topics ranging from gender-based violence and femicide
to identity and motherhood. Johal has worked on notable projects with the Vancouver
Art Gallery, Burrard Arts Foundation, Indian Summer Festival and Vancouver Mural Festival as well as with clients such as the Vancouver Whitecaps, Holt Renfrew, Lululemon and Earls Restaurant Group. Works by Bruce Freedman and the Mythical Man
May 4 - 28, 2022
Reception on Saturday
May 7 from 4-6pm

Let us introduce you to Bruce Freedman and the Mythical Man.

Bruce Freedman is a 71 year old musician who has played the saxophone, composed
music, and has been a part of Vancouvers jazz and improvisation community for over
40 years.

"I have come to the world of visual art quite late in life. I do collage. My palette is very
simple, I work with scissors, glue stick, and for some things, a photo copier. My source material comes mainly from old magazines and discarded books often found in the thrift store. Like I said, simple!"

Originally from Winnipeg, MB, the Mythical Man (aka Myth) moved to Vancouver in
1991, after having received his Bachelors Degree in Music from Brandon University.
Myth has recorded with musica intima, TheLegion of Flying Monkeys, Orkestar
Slivovica, Matthew Good, and The Dreadnaughts.

Although enjoying drawing since a young age, partly encouraged by his father, Myth
didn’t pursue visual arts until approximately 2013, through the Kettle Friendship
Society’s Arts Drop-in program, run by local artist Bill Pope. Since then, his art and
reputation have slowly spread far and wide; his art has been received by people both
locally, throughout Canada, and even as far away as Serbia.

On May 4th the entire exhibition is available to view online at

Student Exhibition: Thresholds and Tapestry of Tales

Join the Burnaby Art Gallery for the opening reception of two exhibitions: Thresholds
and Tapestry of Tales

Thursday April 28th, 7–9 pm
Burnaby Art Gallery
6344 Deer Lake Ave

Thresholds presents the work of seven Burnaby Senior Secondary students in the
Artist Apprenticeship Program. This program mentors students interested in pursuing
careers in fine arts and invites them to develop and curate an exhibition of their own
works. For each of the students, this is the first time presenting their artwork in a
gallery setting.

Representing Moscrop, Burnaby Mountain, Burnaby North, and Burnaby South
secondary schools, the students took part in the program during the winter and spring
of 2022. Guided by professional artists, curators, and programmers, they created
artwork and developed their own exhibition responding to works from the City of
Burnaby Permanent Art Collection.

Arts Alive, Tapestry of Tales (Lower Gallery) April 29 – June 5

This year marks the 40th Anniversary of Arts Alive, an annual showcase of student
works held in partnership with the Burnaby School District. For the momentous
occasion, senior secondary students were asked to contemplate and respond to the
theme Tapestry of Tales. Our lower gallery features student portrayals of collective
memories, which retain their individual self-expression. The exhibition enlists a variety
of material choices such as paper, clay, wire, and acrylic, giving insight into the
students creative processes.

Odyssey—Society Visual Music

Date: Saturday April 23 8pm-10pm
Admission: Free
Location: Outside the Fieldhouse at Burrard View Park

Society Visual Music continues to explore the social and cultural repercussions of the
pandemic through video and sound. The project was formed by the limitations of the
pandemic, particularly the need to communicate electronic music performance in video packages. As we begin to physically gather together again, everything is not the way it was. The digital is more present than ever. To make this visible, at our experimental
screening, Society Visual Musics "Odyssey" projection will stand-in for a physical DJ and
set-up.
Footage of the audience and space will be integrated with "Odyssey" in real-time
using TouchDesigner, immediately turning "live" experience digital and 2-D, and
equalizing audience and performer on screen.
Dancing encouraged.

We can only hint at this with words

Presented by The Gordon and Marion Smith Foundation for Young Artists

Gallery Hours: Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, 12–4 PM, Closed holiday weekends

Admission by donation

Exhibition Opening Reception: Saturday, April 23, 2:00–4:00 pm

Please join guest curator Kate Henderson and exhibiting artists Russna Kaur, M.E.
Sparks, and Andrea Taylor to celebrate the exhibition and launch of its accompanying
publication, a Zine designed by Margery Theroux and featuring commissioned texts by
Yani Kong, SSHRC Doctoral Fellow of Contemporary Art at the School for the Contemporary Arts, Simon Fraser University, Vancouver and Jayne Wilkinson, writer,
editor, and curator.

We can only hint at this with words considers the work of three Canadian women
artists whose work speaks to experiential and radical lines of questioning, bodily
freedom, care, and rebellion. Through multi-surfaced experiential painting, sculpture,
installation, and animation, these three artists aim to fill in the blanks where words
cannot describe the myriad personal, historical, and cultural encounters and
occurrences that make up the human experience. The exhibited works resist the
boundaries of the gallery wall "they creep, fold, and drape throughout the space. In
this way, these mixed-media objects become living, breathing bodies in the room"
entities viewers can engage in wordless conversation with. The artists cull from
childhood narratives, cultural traditions, and art historical legacies to create new
meanings. Through the artists processes of revising histories"both personal and
political"they subvert heteronormative, patriarchal legacies, proposing alternative
narratives that reject oppressive histories bound to the female body.

A Minaret for the General's Wife

A Minaret for the Generals Wife
A Project by Erdem Tadelen
April 23 - July 31, 2022

Co-curated by: Julia Paoli, Director &
Curator, Mercer Union and Toleen Touq, Artistic
Director, South Asian Visual Arts Centre

Launch and Artist Talk on Sat, April 23 at 2pm.

The starting point for Erdem Tadelens exhibition is a little-known architectural oddity
located in the Lithuanian city of K-dainiai, approximately 120 km from the capital
Vilnius. Built in 1880 and restored in 2007, this structure is a freestanding Ottoman-
style minaret that peculiarly has no mosque below or attached to it, and currently sits in
K-dainiai Town Park in a former manor garden. Seized from its original owners after
the failed rebellion of 1863 against Russian rule, the manor was eventually handed
over to a Russian Army General named Eduard Totleben, who constructed the 28-
metre-tall minaret on the site.

Today, visitors can see the K-dainiai Minaret seated on a rectangular stone base with
distinguishing elements such as a sealed doorway, an exposed stairwell that ends
midair, and plaster replicas of two marble plaques. One of these
plaques features a text in Ottoman Turkish that describes a palace built by Sultan Mehmed II"a 15th-century Ottoman ruler"and the other an inscription from the Quran in Arabic that reads: Who is it that can intercede with Him save by His permission? Together, these plaques provide context for two prominent narratives regarding Totlebens construction of the minaret. The first is that the structure was erected as a monument in celebration of Russias victory in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877"78. The marble slabs that
originally adorned the base were brought from Ottoman land as war booty, hence the
description of an older palace on one of them. The General is said to have stored
various souvenirs in a small annex in the structure, which has since been destroyed.
The second, more romantic tale"which locals are said to consider fondly"is that
Totleben had a Turkish wife of Islamic faith for whom he built a mosque, of which only
an orphaned minaret remains today.

In A Minaret for the Generals Wife, the minaret becomes a metaphor for that peculiar and potent feeling of being corporeally out of place, for structures built in locations where they seemingly don’t belong, and for objects brought out of context in other
words; displacement, appropriation, and extractivism. In his search to uncover the
origins of the K-dainiai Minaret, Tadelen takes up these tensions through an array of
disparate and tangentially related materials, assembling miscellanea in a web of
relational and spatial collage. The resulting installation comprises archival documents,
replicas of artefacts, audiovisual material, a curious selection of objects and a book of
vignettes from undisclosed origins. Together, these elements expose and interrupt
connections that enable historical storytelling, and through this tension forge a place
wherein the artist elicits a multiplicity of readings.

At Richmond Art Gallery, Tadelen presents primary sources, translations and
fabulations referencing the K-dainiai Minaret in equal measure; compelling the viewer
to consider the confounding dichotomy between the authenticity of a material record
and the myriad truths spoken by subjective experience. By revealing and
simultaneously obscuring connections between the factual and the speculative,
Tadelen sets the stage for various scenarios that collapse reading and authoring at
the site of encounter. This gesture purposefully (re)constructs the minaret through a
constellation of artworks, where what is deemed poignant or valuable"by virtue of its
presence within the exhibition"is but an invitation to trouble the process of distillation
itself.

A Minaret for the Generals Wife was commissioned and organized by Mercer Union, a
centre for contemporary art and SAVAC (South Asian Visual Arts Centre), Toronto. The
exhibition is made possible with Leading Support from RBC Insurance and Support
from SAHA Association, Istanbul.

The exhibition launch and artist talk will be held on Saturday, April
23 at 2pm.
