Local street photography

With pandemic dragging on, the best idea for getting some fresh air is to go check out something distanced from others and outside. Thankfully, a great show is coming up featuring some talented local street photography is viewable outside the McGill Library at 4595 Albert Street Burnaby, BC V5C 2G6. You can check out the show from January 16 – 30. Make sure you share your photos of the event and tag @van_spc #vanspc_bby7 Tell us about the show, how did it come about? The Burnaby7 was accepted as part of the upcoming Stride Burnaby Arts Festival with our exhibition ‘In Stride’. We are all members of the Vancouver Street Photography Collective (VANSPC), and ‘In Stride’ is our way to participate in the local arts community and promote our photography collective. Who are the Burnaby 7 and why do you all do what you do? The Burnaby7 are seven members of VANSPC who also happen to live in Burnaby. Each of us strives to capture the fleeting and unique moments of street life, wherever we may be.

We are:

 Jax @jaykayseven

 Jake Wong @2xu2xu

 Kathryn Ford @katymight

 Daniel Mosquin @danielmosqin

 Daniel Lin @evoxvisual

 Mike Wong @sureshot_mikew123

 Lily Hawrysh @lilyhawrysh

The show takes place outside, how important are events like this in a yearwhere gathering inside is dangerous?

Very important! After 9+ months of social distancing and isolation, I think we’re all starved for activities to get us outside. To connect in this time of disconnect. ‘In Stride’ by Burnaby7 at the McGill Library (4595 Albert Street January 16 - 30, 2021) is designed for safe outdoor viewing. Our exhibition can also be found online at van-spc.com/instride .

Any tips for people who want to get into street photography?

Always have a camera with you. (iPhones are convenient and unobtrusive, several of our members use them with great results).

There are many ‘styles’ of street photography. Do some research to see what appeals to you.

Join a photography group (like VANSPC Vancouver Street Photography Collective)!

And most importantly, have fun!
