Exploring Dimensions.

A few days before the New Year, I had the opportunity to go to the Dimensions Art Gallery (432 W Hastings) and have fun with the many backdrops/rooms that fill this space. I was so impressed by the way each work of art was designed and displayed. Then when I found out that the painted pieces were made by Canadian and local Vancouver residents, I was thrilled. I love supporting local shops and art and this gallery did both!

The co-founders of Dimensions Art Gallery, Manie Ho, Darryl Lim and Dee Obaro, wanted to open a space to display artistic pieces that engaged their audience and asked them to be creative. This is their first gallery and the first 3D hand painted interactive space in Vancouver. Although COVID brought about new restrictions, this gallery has taken it in strides and followed regulations. In addition, it seems that the holidays have brought a steady stream of visitors. I found the artwork, the staff and their COVID measures to be great!

From the many rooms available to take pictures in, it was hard to pick a favorite. However, I spent a lot of time in the infinity room created by Dee and Manie. In my own work as a photographer, I really enjoy taking pictures that use reflections and this room was full of it. I found myself lost in the different angles and shots available and only wished I could share it with others. I hope this piece stays in the gallery so that one day I can revisit with friends and go to town!

In addition, to this room, I found the other installations to be fascinating. Each artist really found a way to make each small space unique. For example, one room made me feel large and small, another room took me to Mario’s world and I was even able to climb the walls like my favorite superhero - Spiderman. The time in this gallery literally flies by!

The co-founders are already looking ahead into 2021 and have an app in the works, plan to include Augmented Reality and intend on commissioning artists for a new set of hand painted works. With this New Year upon us that can only be better than the last (I hope), I look forward to seeing what else is in store for Vancouver residents at the Dimensions Art Gallery.
